Diablo 4 Season 15, known as Season of Hell's Legacy, brings classic runewords into a newer endgame system. The appeal is obvious: old favourites return, but they now fit modern builds and progression. Before chasing rare materials, it helps to understand how the whole process works. A plain white Ancestral item is the starting point, and useful D4 items can make early preparation less frustrating. The base item's original sockets do not decide the finished result, so focus on its item level and overall suitability.
Build The Base Item First
The first two steps matter more than most players expect. Take the white Ancestral gear to the Occultist or use the Horadric Cube to remove its existing affixes. You need a completely blank base before adding the rune sequence. Once the item is clean, place it in the Cube with the required runes and transmute the set. The result is a Unique item with fixed core statistics, much like the classic versions that inspired the system. It is worth checking the recipe twice, since a misplaced rune can waste a long farming session.
Where The Best Upgrades Come From
Fixed statistics do not mean fixed potential. Repeating the same craft can produce Greater Affixes, giving high-end players another reason to chase a stronger copy. Masterworking also works on these items, so a good roll can be pushed much further through late-game upgrades. An unwanted affix may be changed through enchantment, while extra sockets allow modern Vessel of Hatred runes to be added. That creates unusual combinations, and some builds will benefit more from a balanced setup than from simply choosing the rarest recipe.
| Runeword | Runes | Practical use | | Stealth | Tal, Eth | Fast leveling and resource support | | Lore | Ort, Sol | Early skill ranks and protection | | Enigma | Jah, Ith, Ber | Mobility and strong defensive value | | Grief | Eth, Tir, Lo, Mal, Ral | High physical damage for melee builds | | Call to Arms | Multiple high-tier runes | Extra skills and stronger shouts |
Pick Recipes Around Your Playstyle
Enigma is still a major target for players who want Teleport on classes that do not normally have it. Grief suits physical melee characters because its flat damage increase scales well with weapon-focused builds. Call to Arms is useful for Barbarians and Druids that rely on shout effects. During leveling, Stealth and Lore are easier to assemble and often provide more immediate value. Spirit and Infinity are attractive options for casters, especially when faster casting, extra skill ranks, or resistance reduction are central to the build.
Plan The Rune Hunt
Nightmare Dungeons are a steady source of common and uncommon runes, while high-tier materials such as Jah, Ber, and Lo demand patience. Season 15 also brings back Whimsyshire, a hidden area with stronger rewards and dense enemy packs. Players can enter it after finding and using the Liquid Rainbow, then clear it with a group for better efficiency. Keep a short shopping list before each session, and consider buying cheap Diablo IV Gold when you need to cover routine costs while saving rare runes for the craft that fits your build.
